Our reader finds these a fun read.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John LeCarre
This takes place in Britain duringThe Cold War in book 5 of the George Smiley series. George is pulled out of forced retirement to spy on spies. A mole in the circus has foiled the British Secret Intelligence Service. How can our hero save us all. Dum Da Dum Dum!
The Murder of Tutankhamen, A 3000 Year Old Murder Mystery by Bob Brier
The author is a well-know Egyptologist who studied the mummy of King Tut in the late 1900’s. King Tut was a boy Pharoah who died at age 19. Modern X-rays of his skull suggested a violent death. In a carefully researched book. Brier comes to the murder conclusion, which is hampered by the fact that so many tombs were robbed, evidence is scattered all over the world, found buried in storerooms, and sold in souvenir shops to this day. What happened to his widow, who followed him? The reader called an incredible investigation. The was a GBCL book sale find and greatly enjoyed.
Dear Theo by Irving Stone
France: Famous artist Vincent Van Gogh carried on a correspondence with his brother, Theo, for all his life. He kept the letters, but his replies are gone.
Vincent was beset by poverty and mental illness and broke the rules of academic art yet did not receive accolades during his lifetime. His art and his letters speak of his soul as he descended into madness. Our reader related and found it hard for her to read.
Discussion began with how some books require all of our attention causing us to get numb, so we read something ‘light’ before diving back into the ‘heavier,’ albeit very interesting, book we feel we must finish it.
Which is how we came up with next month’s topic.
Our next meeting takes place Jan. 13, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. The topic is a authors you read when you need a break from a book that requires all of your attention.
If a series, hopefully the first book, such as Travis McGee. Stephanie Plum. Harry Bosch, The Cat Who.., Sneaky Pie Brown, Mma Ramotsoe and others.
